Paolo Picchio

Paolo Picchio

Musicologist, accordionist, arranger and composer. He graduated with honors in Musicology (DAMS) at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Bologna with a thesis on contemporary music for accordion. He has taught Music Theory, Harmony, History of Music and Accordion at various schools in his region. From 1992 to 2013 he was the Artistic Director of the “Città di Castelfidardo” Award and International Competition and from 1994 to 2001 of the “Astor Piazzolla” International Award.

He has held numerous lectures on the life and works of Astor Piazzolla, the accordion and his repertoire and other historical-musicological aspects in Italy and abroad (Croatia, Czech Republic, France and Slovakia). He regularly publishes articles in some magazines, in particular in the newspaper “Fisarmoniæ – Accordion and surroundings” and on “Accordions Worldwide” the world website on the accordion on the Internet and on the monthly “Suonare news” where he takes care of the accordion page.

He participated, as a member of the Jury, in various national and international competitions (Pula – Croatia, Aubagne – France, Pianello Val Tidone – Italy, Poprad – Slovakia, Lanciano – Italy, Capistrello – Italy, Hořovice – Czech Republic, Atri – Italy). He is the author of the section dedicated to the musical repertoire in the book “Castelfidardo and the history of the accordion”. In 2004 he published the volume “The concert accordion and his repertoire” for the Brillarelli editions, an in-depth examination of contemporary writing for accordion performed through forty important accordion compositions of the late twentieth century.

As a composer he has published 3 easy studies (for accordion) and Drei Bildern (orchestra) for the Rondo editions of Prague, Ostinato (accordion), and Barvin editions of Rome. He is the President of the Music Marche Accordions Consortium.
