This precocious musician came on stage at the age of eleven. A native of Haute-Savoie, he made his musical debut in the harmony of his city by learning the clarinet. Despite the piano lessons at the Geneva Conservatory and those with his accordion teacher essential for his
instrument, his learning and his experience will be quite self-taught with more than twenty years spent on the axes practicing music for dance. At thirty he moved to Paris. He was quickly noticed by jazz musicians on the French scene, such as Louis Winsberg and Jean-Marc Jafet, who hired him in their respective bands. In the world of song, as an accompanist, he performs with artists from all walks of life such as Charles Aznavour, Harry Belafonte, Patrick Bruel, Maurane, Gilbert Bécaud, Serge Lama, Andréa Bocelli, Placido Domingo, Grégoire, Zaz, Julien Clerc and many others… In jazz we find him in particular with Didier Lockwood, Youn Sun Nah and plays in the quartet of Dee Dee Bridgewater for a tour of over two hundred concerts around the world for the album “J’ai Deux Amours”. His talent as a composer and renowned melodist led him to write for images, entertainment and songs, particularly for Claude Nougaro, Richard Bona and Grand Corps Malade. He founded his own jazz group and his first album “Les Couleurs d’ici” (1998) nominated for the Django d’Or, his two albums “Jazz / No Jazz” Volume 1 & Volume 2 (2004) “reveal him as the bearer of originality, of an unusual musicality” (Didier Lockwood). In 2011, he released his album “In Other Words” recorded with Giovanni Mirabassi, Henri Texier and André Ceccarelli. In 2018, an important studio album with no less than 10 artists, an orchestra of 17 strings, “Le Bal des Mondes”. For this album, collaborations continue with the Moroccan artist Majid Bekkas in particular. In 2020 comes out an unreleased recording “Les Couleurs d’ici – Live” acclaimed by critics and Internet users who find themselves at the first place among the Top Jazz on Mezzo. The last opera for May 2022 is another unreleased Live “Les Choses de la Vie” recorded in trio with Giovanni Mirabassi and Laurent Vernerey during a private concert in complete privacy. Always surrounded by top-class musicians, including very often those of the first hour, through multiple trips and musical meetings, Marc Berthoumieux has forged his art, always with a strong and immediately recognizable identity.
